Cantine Federiciane's Volcanic Wine Experience
The Cantine Federiciane wine story began four generations ago in the vineyards of the Phlegraean Fields in Bacoli just west of the City of Naples; a place of significant volcanic activity and also the Palumbo family's place of origin. There making a red and a white wine from the indigenous grape varieties of Piedirosso and Falanghina. Next they turned their sights on recovering the famous ancient local wine of Gragnano. Gragnano's fame is also marked by an appearance in Toto’s “Miseria e Nobilità" starring Sophia Loren; whence the character Pasquale insists to the protagonist Felice, that Gragnano be the only wine on the shopping list or no wine at all. The wine's namesake is the hill top town it is from, Gragnano, which is snuggly wedged between the dramatic landscapes of the Lattari mountains and the Amalfi Coast (also famous for pasta and cheese). It is a fruity effervescent red that is served chilled similar to Lambrusco, and according to the Neapolitan people, it is the quintessential pizza pairing wine. It is also an excellent match served with charcuterie. Cantine Federiciane is widely considered a top producer of Gragnano and its sister wine Lettere; both wines have received the Gambero Rosso Berebene Award.
The current generation, the three Palumbo brothers, with parents Antonio Sr and Pina overseeing, have added two beautiful volcanic sparkling wines to their production which are part of a special project called Cuvée Metropolitano. A project unique to Paris, Vienna and Naples, where quality wines are made from historical vineyards that lay within the City limits. The Cantine Federiciane Flegreo Spumante di Falanghina and Flegreo Spumante Rosato wines are charmat sparkling wines produced from grapes of ungrafted vines residing in the volcanic soil of the Campi Flegrei; and designed to become 'the' Neapolitan aperitif.
